What was your creative process: I love simple designs and bright colours, both of which feature greatly in the fabric I choose for making bibs and nappy pants, so knew exactly what fabric I was going to choose. Stashed away in my fabric box was this gorgeous owl and turtle fabric I had purchased over a year ago. When I purchased this fabric I thought it would be fantastic for bedlinen. So for this project it was perfect!!

I'm not one for following patterns well, so after reading several pillowcase patterns, I decided to grab one out of the linen cupboard and use that as my template. Sewing up the seams and the flaps wasn't as challenging as I first thought. I also learnt a new skill, applique. I have always been interested in this technique, so this project was the perfect opportunity tp learn.

I hope this pillow case, with its bold colours, brightens a small child's day.

What was your creative process: Owning a bedlinen business I knew how to make a pillowcase but needed to think of a way it would reflect my style. It suddenly dawned on me that most of my bedlinen is made from panels of fabrics, trimmed with ribbons - hence I created a pillowcase out of spots, stripes and bright colours, with a touch of ribbon. Whilst I initially intended to create a unisex design, it finished up a bit girly; so I hope it can brighten the world of perhaps a teenage girl.

What was your creative process: I used one of my household pillowcases as a guide and made up my pattern. I made my pillowcase before realising they are supposed to be unisex so this one is to brighten up a princess's room. This has been one of the simplest but most rewarding things I have made and I loved rummaging through the local vintage shop for the lace trim. I wanted something pretty and sweet so the princess fabric and spot pink polka dot fabric is soft and girly. The trickiest part was getting the inner flap correct before sewing it all together and making sure my lace was straight.

The Great Pillowcase Challenge: Little Toot Creations

What was your creative process: I took some measurements from a standard pillowcase, selected some coordinating fabrics and made the rest up as I went along!

I started by finishing the raw edge of one end (you could overlock this, or create a 1cm double turned hem as I did). This then becomes the edge of your inside ‘flap’. On mine, I chose a coordinating fabric for the outside edge.

I stitched this to the main fabric (right side of your coordinating fabric to wrong side of your main fabric), then folded it out and pressed along the seam to create the pillowcase edge. I then turned under the raw edge of the coordinating fabric and top-stitched it to the main fabric.

Perhaps the trickiest part of making a pillowcase is figuring out how to ‘layer’ the fabrics when it comes time to sew up the side seams. For mine, I folded the pillowcase with right sides together so the eventual front of the pillowcase was facing down. I then brought the ‘flap’ (which ends up on inside the pillowcase) over to the top. After sewing up and finishing the side seams, you then turn your flap out, to give the result you can see in the pictures.

The Great Pillowcase Challenge

Before things start to get busy for our Coop member we thought we'd put our talents to a good use. We have decided to make unique pillowcases for 'Pillowcases for Oncology Kids'.

Founded in July 2011 by then 15 yr old Brittany, their mission is to donate pillowcases to oncology kids in hospitals around Australia.

The following businesses will be creating pillowcase for this wonderful charity:

* = Member of the Handmade Cooperative

We will share with you photos of the finished pillowcases as they are completed.

UPDATE:

Pillowcases are to be completed by the 19th February 2012.

Anyone can be part of the Great Pillowcase Challenge - you don't have to be a Coop member
POK asks that we make pillowcases that are a standard size, one suitable for both boys and girls of all ages, babies through to teenagers. You can use a pre made pillowcase and applique it
100% cotton is preferable.
There are 3 patterns that people have been using. They can be found the the POK FB Page under Notes

When you finish your pillowcase can you please:

Photograph your pillow and send the photos to Christine Percy via cpercydesigns@aanet.com.au (limit of 3 photos - one photo of the entire pillow and 2 showing closer detail).
All photos sent in will be posted on the HCH4K blog. It would be preferable that you place your logo somewhere on the photo.
Also send me a little blurb about your creative process ie why you chose that fabric, what is special about the pillow and how it fits in with your business' style.
Send the pillowcase to your State's Representative, see there FB info page for details. It would be great if you could add a note saying this pillow case was donated by your business as part of the Handmade Cooperative's Great Pillowcase Challenge.

2. What was your first job? How did that influence your future?
Retail Assistant. I was trained by an amazing couple who really excelled at customer service and gave me a great grounding in understanding and respecting people.  

3. What lead you to do what you are doing now (in relation to the handmade items you are making now)
When I had my children I was deeply shocked at just how much the technical age that we live in has shaped and influenced our Little People … I simply wanted them to enjoy the fun and innocent side of being a child.  

4. If you were to try a new form of crafting what would it be?
Knitting

  5. Who do you have a craft crush on?
Sher Christopher – who is an amazing English Paper Craft Artist. He makes awe inspiring emotive paper figurines

6. What is your favourite item you make? I love the fact that our Magical Mermaid costume makes so many (mostly little girls) feel very special.  

7. What was the last handmade thing you have purchased and from where?
A new stamped wedding band for my husband from a very talented Etsy seller in the US for our 10th wedding anniversary … the last one has not left his finger and had been abused terribly!

I started out in 2009 with my goodies selling through local stores and then I started selling online and at local markets. I am now very busy with my little "hobby" and have a few stores in Sydney and Queensland stocking Mulberry Road items.

And then there were 4!!! Amelia Lillie Bugg is my daughter who will soon be 2! She is my 1st daughter and 4th child and my inspiration to sew. A Lillie Bug evolved through the creation of gorgeous ‘girly garments’ I begun crafting in January 2010.

On creating these feminine pieces I had a little 3 year standing at the sewing table looking awfully jealous … hence we have included boys garments in our range!

Our main aim is practicality! If its not practical and comfy its not in our range.

Secondly, cost effective is so important to most parents… so to keep the price’s reasonable is our virtue.
